Helping Authors Write Their Very Best Book…

About My Services

I enjoy working with writers and new authors. I love the challenge of making a good book into a great book! Often, writers aren’t familiar with the elements of great fiction, the nuts and bolts of solid writing, or how to best communicate their heart. I’ve developed the following services to help you write your best book possible:

  • Private Writing/Coaching Services
  • Manuscript Evaluation
  • Manuscript Critique
  • Substantive Edit
  • Line Edit/Copy Edit
  • Proofreading

No erotica, science fiction, or children’s book will be considered at this time.

Additional Points

With respect to the Manuscript Critique and the Substantive Edit, my desire is to work with writers or authors who are either ready or almost ready for publication. I will easily be able to determine this from your writing sample based on basic writing rules and your integration of craft techniques.

I will provide you with a contract that clearly defines what will be provided to you. If you would like to hire me, please contact me by email with a telephone number and your availability at (3) three meeting times in the next 48-72 hours, so that we may discuss your project. Email:

If you decide to contract me to provide a service, you are under no obligation to accept or agree with the changes I suggest. Editing is subjective in nature. My suggestions and feedback may contradict other feedback you have received. This is normal. I make comments based on my understanding of the craft of fiction, current trends in the publishing, and based on my own writing experience. My ideas may be different from someone else who may be equally qualified to make suggestions.

I accept payments by PayPal at, postal money order or cashier’s check. Please contact me to let me know what service you would like and how you want to pay and I will give you instructions.

  • I require payment of the first month of Coaching Services prior to scheduling the first session.
  • I require a 50% deposit before I will begin all other editing services. The balance is due before delivery of the project.
  • If necessary, please contact me to discuss a payment plan that fits your budget. I am a very reasonable person who is willing to work with you to meet your needs.

I also occasionally take assignments critiquing a query or synopsis for existing customers. These will be taken on a case-by-case basis and a price will be determined.

Proofread Only projects are billed at $1.50 per page. A page is 250 words. Delivery is 7 days from confirmation of payment. 50% deposit is due at acceptance. The price may be adjusted based on the quality of your writing.

Thanks for stopping by and considering my services. I wish you the very best of success in your journey to publication or republication.

Many Blessings,

~ Sherri

Manuscript Evaluation

The Manuscript Evaluation is for the writer/author who has written a manuscript or a good portion of the manuscript and you need an evaluation of the project. This is a look at the big picture. It’s an overview type of critique where basic plot, characterization and consistency will be evaluated. Although the entire projects submission will be read, it will not have line-by-line comments that address all the elements of your story in detail. A manuscript evaluation is recommended during the early stages of your work or if you have received several rejections from editors and want to have your work reviewed before sending it out again.

What you will receive:

A 1-2 page summary write up that outlines the strengths and weakness of your character, plot and story structure. A phone call to discuss my summary.

What you will pay:

I charge $ .75 per page for manuscript evaluations. A page is 275 words.

If this sounds like it fits your needs contact me by Email at

Manuscript Critique

The Manuscript Critique is for you if you have written an entire manuscript or a good portion of your manuscript and would like in-depth feedback. The manuscript critique is a higher level process than the evaluation, because in addition to identifying strengths and weaknesses in character, story structure and marketability, I will also analyze for key writing and story elements as follows:

  • Opening hook/inciting incident
  • Pacing
  • POV (point of view)
  • Dialogue
  • Use of dialogue tags vs. beats
  • Distinct character voices
  • Adverbs
  • Passive verbs
  • Backstory
  • Description
  • Showing vs. telling
  • Balance between narrative and dialogue
  • Unique use of prose and identification of cliché statements
  • Realism in character emotions
  • Voice
  • Scene structure–goal, motivation, conflict
  • Redundancies

What you will receive:

A redline edit throughout the document in Microsoft Word for the elements listed above and a 3 to 7 page summary of my evaluation/analysis of character and story structure and all the elements listed above. This service does not include rewriting. Rewriting is included in the Substantive Edit service.

I will email you your completed project at a predetermined delivery date by 9 p.m. eastern standard time on that date. If a hard-copy red-line is your preference this will require a printing and postage fee to be determined based on the size of the project. I will tell you where to mail your project if you choose this option.

Please also note that your project WILL NOT be proofread. (Proofreading includes spelling, punctuation and basic grammar.) Proofreading should be done as the final check of your manuscript. You should never pay for this during the critique or substantive edit process. (See Proofread Only service at the end.)

Normal delivery of critique projects will be within 7-10 days of acceptance, 10-14 days for projects over 80,000 words and 14-18 days for projects over 95,000 words. (Although they can rarely be accommodated, you may contact me for “rush job” prices.)
I am a very fair person. If I determine that your project was in excellent condition and I had very few suggestions for improvement, I will refund half of your fee, so that you may spend those monies to have your project proofread.

What you will pay:

I charge a flat rate based on word count and you may submit a Full or Partial Manuscript. If you cannot afford a full manuscript critique, keep in mind a partial critique can really help identify weaknesses in your writing that you can correct moving forward. A partial critique may also be helpful in identifying weakness in your story.

  • Word 1 to 20,000 words: $75
  • 20,001 to 30,000 words: $125
  • 30,001 to 40,000 words: $150
  • 40,001 to 50,000 words: $200
  • 50,001 to 60,000 words: $250
  • 60,001 to 75,000 words: $300
  • 75,001 to 85,000 words: $350
  • 85,001 to 90,001 words: $400
  • 90,001 to 95,000 words: $450
  • 95,000 to 100,000 words: $500

Please contact me for pricing on projects over 100,000 words

The price for a second critique of the same project will be negotiated based on your submission, but generally if noticeable improvements have been made, the price will be cut by 25% of the regular price. Repeat customers will also receive a 10% discount on a new project. A 15% discount will also be applied to your next project when you refer me to another customer. (Limit one discount per project.) Your referral will receive a 5% discount as well.

Sounds great? How do you get started? With a sample.

Contact me a free sample of my work.

I will provide a sample edit of your work for the fee of $15 – maximum 2,000 words .  This will provide you with a more substantial look at my service. The turnaround time for the substantive sample is 3 (three) business days from confirmation of payment. Your work must be submitted in Microsoft WORD. (no PDF’s or emailed content permitted). The fee for the sample will be deducted from the total if you contract me to complete a critique of your project within 45 days of the sample being delivered.  Please email sample requests to me at with Editing Sample in the subject.

Substantive Edit

The Substantive Edit is the most comprehensive service I provide. It includes a complete manuscript critique, but in addition, I provide you with suggestions that will help to improve the manuscript. This edit is highly developmental in nature. It will help get to the nuts and bolts of what needs to be fixed with suggestions on how to fix it. The Substantive Edit includes line editing of sentence structure and paragraphs and some rewriting, but not proofreading.

The elements of plot, structure, characterization and pacing are the things that will make or break your manuscript. Many authors, particularly self-published authors will hire an editor to provide proofreading when in truth the manuscript has larger structural issues or problems with characters or plausibility issues that are hard for the writer to see because the writer is so familiar with the story. These larger issues will keep a manuscript from being published. An acquisitions editor or an agent will not turn down a great story because the writer is weak on comma usage. They will, however, reject a novel when larger issues exist such as undeveloped characters or weak plot or bad pacing, because these things require too much work to be fixed. Reviewers will also give you a bad review for these issues, because they are hard to overlook. This is why substantive editing is so important. You may only have one chance with an editor or agent. Make sure your manuscript is as rejection-proof as possible.

What you will receive

A phone call to discuss my findings/comments, a detailed red-line edit throughout the document in Microsoft Word and a detailed write up (often 5 – 10 pages) that discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the plot and characters. With plot, I look at overall premise, the main conflict, the flow of one scene to the next, the black moment/final climax, the resolution, and places where the story is redundant, goes off track, or moves away from the main plot. The write up will also evaluate any sub-plots and whether or not they are well-integrated into the story and add or detract from the main story line. With characters, I provide a detailed analysis of the main characters’ Goals, Motivations, and Conflicts, and discuss how those could be strengthened or better-utilized in the story. I also discuss how those characters fit into and enhance the plot and make suggestions for minor characters roles.

I will make comments directly into the manuscript itself, as well as the summary at the end of the manuscript. However, please note that a Substantive Edit will not include proofreading (punctuation, grammar and spelling). There will be some, particularly when I see blatant errors, but the purpose of this edit is to deliver suggestions for rewriting. Proofreading is never done at this stage of writing. (See Proofread Only service.)

Please note that while I will do some rewriting, this is just to give you examples of how to execute what I have noted. I don’t write, rewrite, or correct your manuscript for you. So rewriting will be heaviest at the beginning of the manuscript.

Does this sound like what you need? Want to know how to get started? Or is what I’m saying making sense, but you’re not sure what the end product will look like? I recommend we start with a First Chapter Edit sample.

I will complete a partial first chapter substantive edit of your manuscript as a sample.  The fee for the sample is $15.

In order to receive a sample, please submit the prologue or portion of the first chapter of your manuscript and synopsis of the story. The writing sample must be at least 750 words, but cannot exceed 2,000. If we choose to work together, the fee will be deducted from the total cost of the edit.

What you will pay:

A Substantive Edit is only available for a full manuscript. Prices for a Substantive Edit are as follows:

  • 35,000 – 55,000 words $ 400 (novella length)
  • 55,001 – 65,000 words $ 500 (short fiction)
  • 65,001 – 85,000 words $ 600
  • 85,001 – 95,000 words $ 700
  • 95,001 – 105,000 words – $800 (long fiction)
  • 105,000 words and up $ 50 for every 2500 additional words.

Delivery of a Substantive Edit is between 10-15 days depending on the word count and the work required on my part. A final delivery date will be provided once the first chapter sample is completed.
